Read a Book, Build a Library

Read a Book, Build a Library is a Project Based Learning program (PBL), which introduces students to a real life problem and allows them to be a part of the solution. RBBL is a two fold project that involves a traveling suitcase full of books/school supplies that go to a local charitable organization or shipped overseas. As characteristic of all journeys, the suitcase undergoes several destinations before reaching its final location.

Destination 1
The suitcase is delivered to a local classroom, youth group, or after school club. The suitcase includes books and school supplies to be donated, reading logs, project ideas, and talking points focused on a charitable organization and the real life facts about that given organization. The instructor encourages students to read and complete their reading logs within a 9 week grading period time frame.

Destination 2
Upon completion of reading logs, students donate the suitcase to the designated charity that services children who are in need of the reading material/school supplies.

Destination 3
Suitcase is returned to the McFadden Resource Center where it is repacked to be made ready to continue the journey of literacy and community service.
