RBBL: HONDURAS

The idea for this project came from James' visit to Honduras in February 2012.  He went with a group of local dentists and it was life changing for him.  The trip intensified his determination to help not only our refugees but people, especially children living in poverty stricken conditions.  He is also working with inner city school children and had this idea to develop a program that would assist not only the students in Honduras but the kids here as well.  We have established a reading program in which our students read books to complete a reading log.  These students then help us fund-raise and pack books and supplies to take to students in Honduras.

This program is also in memory of an outstanding tutor that worked for MRC.  We lost Michael F. Owens in April 2012.  He is greatly missed and forever loved, but Mike would not want this to be sad, as he would want this to be about those kids down in Honduras who will be receiving brand new books and about the kids in those inner city schools who are begging to read.  Mike was an educator and a man who believed in uniting people of all races through education.  This first library in Honduras will be in honor of him, The Micheal F. Owens Library.

  1. Hi James and Marie,
Your mom spoke with every class today and explained your photos. She even showed pictures from Haiti and compared to those from Honduras.Cathy also discussed the idea that when 2 groups unit with one good idea can make that idea better. ( the partnership between Sonrisas and MRC)
Our students came up with a few questions:
    1. How does Sister Edith get large amounts of food when you're not there to help?
Do local people help to take care of their needs?

    2. Who actually built the new orphanage? How did they get the money?

    3. Do they have much wood growing in forests for building houses?

Keep in touch and send more pictures!!!
